It’s no secret that plastic pollution is a big threat to our planet, and it’s only expected to get worse. Microplastics are everywhere in the environment – and scientists have recently discovered that they’re embedded deep into the Arctic ice.
The use of plastics boomed after the end of World War II and it’s important to acknowledge that technological and medical advancements would not have developed so well without it, but the demand is now far beyond industrial use. Single-use plastics, although banned in many countries, are still being created and used internationally every day, and are not being disposed of appropriately.
One million plastic bottles are purchased every minute around the world, in what scientists describe as an environmental crisis. These bottles, of course, are widely recycled globally but it is estimated that only 9% of all plastics produced are recycled. In the UK, less than a third of all plastic is recycled.
One step that we’re making here at Plastic-ID to find plastic pollution solutions is introducing RPET lanyards. Plastic bottles are made from PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which means RPET lanyards are made from recycled polyethylene terephthalate – recycled plastic bottles!
Products made from RPET plastics are not a new phenomenon – the plastics that go through the correct recycling process are shredded down to a raw form and used to create a number of new recycled plastic products, so it’s important to ensure that your plastics are placed in the correct recycling bin instead of ending up in a landfill.
Lanyards made from RPET materials are available in a variety of plain colours, or they can be custom printed with your company logo or event’s branding. Printing on lanyards does not affect how they are recycled.
If you use lanyards for your business or have an events management company that uses lanyards for badging, using recycled plastic lanyards can reduce the impact your supplies have on the environment.
We also make sure we securely recycle our disposable items such as printed ID cards, printer ribbons, etc. This is just one in a number of actions we’re making to reduce the impact our business may have on plastic pollution in the oceans, rural areas, and elsewhere in the environment. As you may have seen, we’ve partnered with Plastic Bank – an organisation that focuses on removing discarded plastics from the ocean and preventing them from ending up there in the first place.
Plastic Bank works by partnering with poor communities next to waterways in a range of countries and encourages them to collect plastic that’s polluting their environment in exchange for cash, school tuition, healthcare, and more.
Our partnership with Plastic Bank means that for every order placed, 10 plastic bottles are removed from the ocean, and we’ve partnered with this organisation because plastic pollution is an issue close to our hearts. 100,000 marine mammals and turtles, and further 1 million sea birds are killed by plastic pollution in the ocean each year, and it’s estimated that it affects nearly 700 species – including those that are endangered.
One shocking plastic pollution fact is that there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish by 2050, if we carry on with the current rate of plastic production and consumption. Despite the fact that none of us are personally discarding plastic directly into the sea, we all have a duty to make changes to prevent the destruction of ecosystems like oceans.
Using recycled PET lanyards is a step in the right direction, and you can read more about our other eco-friendly solutions here.
